Indoor Plants for Kids

Plants are imperative to creating a natural and healthy atmosphere at home—particularly when you barely find time for parks and other recreational areas due to a busy schedule, or you simply have to spend most of your time indoors for a variety of reasons.

You may not even notice that decorative plant at home anymore, but its positive effect on your mind and subconscious is undeniable. Indoor plants actually minimize stress, anxiety and depression, which is naturally great for your mental and physical health.

Plants tend to be particularly great if you have kids. Of course, in that case, you must keep in mind that not every plant is good for children: for example, Spatyphillum (Peace Lily), Philodendron and certain succulents.

Plants are categorized as safe or unsafe based on their toxicity. To put it into simple terms, some plants may be poisonous for humans if they touch our skin or are possibly even ingested. That is why it is important to check their toxicity levels (poison control) before purchasing, particularly if you live with kids.

However, there are some plants that you can bring into your home with complete confidence, even if children are present.

Boston Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata)

The Boston Fern is great for increasing humidity in the air, so you might as well get a few of these plants instead of buying an expensive humidifier and be sure that you will have a safe and natural humidifier at home. The Boston Fern is often found hanging, as it looks particularly elegant as part of the décor.

Soleirolia (Baby’s Tears or Helxine soleiroli)

Soleirolia has numerous tiny teardrop-shaped leaves. These leaves tend to grow constantly, which is why the plant is usually placed on a top shelf or hung from the ceiling in a special basket or pot.

The Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)

Commonly referred to as the spider plant, Chlorophytum comosum is one of the most adaptable houseplants. Moreover, the spider plant filters and purifies the air that is often filled with benzoyl, gas, formaldehyde or xylene—some of the most common organic compounds. These are mostly accumulated in the air we breathe from furniture and paint, as they are common industrial compounds, used for production of rubber, leather or other materials.

African Violet Saintpaulia

Stunning African Saintpaulia, with its tendency to bloom almost year-round, is one of the most common indoor plants in the world. Not only is it considered as the best natural décor item by many, the Saintpaulia also happens to be completely safe for kids.

Schlumbergera (Christmas Cactus)

Another child-safe plant that’s also easy to propagate is the Christmas cactus. It only needs to be watered once a month and is also a great plant to teach kids how to get into plants.
