Basics of decorating in contemporary style

Moving to a new place may be overwhelming and is oftentimes associated with a variety of intense emotions, most of which are a result of immense effort it takes to decorate it. Lately, contemporary style has been particularly popular. However, not many actually know that contemporary style is quite different from the modern one. The ultimate difference between the two is the fact that modern design refers to a specific time period from early to mid-twentieth century, whereas contemporary design style may encompass virtually anything au courant—including minimalism, Art Deco etc. and even modernism itself. Here are a few simple tricks to grasp the most important details of contemporary design style:

How can you create contemporary interior?

  •  Contemporary living rooms feature a classic wooden floor and carpets—simple, perhaps even geometric.
  •  General lighting is simple yet efficient, accentuating elements of decor and architecture.
  •  Combination of metal, stone and transparent or opaque glass.

Uses of color

Neutrals, white and black are the main colors in contemporary style interior.

Imagine a neutral space that is a perfect foundation for a distinct characteristic color, later to accentuate expressive artwork and a variety of other elements. The right choice of color in your living room will certainly allow you to redecorate the place as many times as you wish in the future, as customary in contemporary design. If you decide to paint the walls and windows in pastels, use neutrals to decorate.

Line and space

The most obvious and distinctive element of a contemporary style interior is the line. Whether straight vertical or horizontal lines or curved shapes, strong visible lines are evident in any contemporary-style home. The line is also found in architectural details, use of bold color blocks, high ceilings, bare windows, and geometric shapes in wall art and sculpture.

The bare space on walls, between pieces of furniture and above in upper areas, becomes as important as the areas filled with objects. In contemporary interiors, “less is more.” Each piece stands out as individual and unique.

Make sure to take advantage of structural elements. When it comes to contemporary design style, air ducts may hang from the ceiling, and even exposed plumbing pipes are perfectly acceptable. If you are looking to draw the eye, you may paint these structural details in bold contrasting colors or blend them with the walls to diminish their importance.

Furniture

Furniture pieces should make a bold statement but be simple and uncluttered at the same time—without curves or decoration. Smooth, clean geometric shapes are essential. Upholstered furniture is often black, white or neutral, based on natural fibers that add textural appeal. For example, such fabrics include wool, cotton, silk, linen or even jute. You may then use pillows in clean geometric shapes to add a shot of texture and color.

Sofas, chairs and ottomans often have exposed legs. You should select beds and chairs without skirts, trims or ornaments. Make sure to stay away from excessively carved details, be it floral shapes or anything of sorts.

Lighting

Track lighting (მოძრავი, ე.წ. რელსის, ლენტის განათება) and recessed lighting (შეჩერებული განათება) will allow you distribute lighting across the space. Regardless of whether you are renovating an old place or constructing a new one, make sure to consider installing cove lighting or indirect light, with colorful fixtures with metallic elements.

Use spotlights for painting, prints and posters. These will help to draw the eye to the very pieces that are important to you. Contemporary style sculptures or framed art may be placed at eye level, on a structural column or pedestal.

Frames in high-gloss or matte black, natural wood, or metal finishes are perfect for artwork. If you are looking to place several pieces together, hang them close together, so that they appear as a single piece. Contemporary-style rooms should not be cluttered with multiple collections or too many pieces, as open space is often just as important.
